Vivaah Sanskar
Filming Vivaah Sanskar since 2000, now traveling to mandaps across the United States.
The work
Every wedding we film is shot, cut and graded in house, no sub-contracted crews, no stock transitions.
The Hindu wedding
A Hindu ceremony takes place around a fire. The Agni at the heart of the mandap witnesses every promise the couple makes, and for a camera it is also a demanding light: warm, flickering and constantly shifting against colored drapes and venue spotlights.
We plan exposure and color around that flame instead of fighting it. Our team has filmed Vivaah ceremonies since 2000 and knows the sequence, from the Varmaala and Kanyadaan to the seven steps of the Saptapadi. Families keep different rituals, so we confirm your running order with your Pandit before the wedding, and we check with your venue on how it handles an open flame indoors.
Order of service
The Vivaah Sanskar
Seven steps around a fire that never holds still.
- Where
- Under an ornamented mandap, the Agni burning at its heart while the Pandit recites Sanskrit mantras. In the US this is often a hotel ballroom, a banquet hall or a lawn, each with its own rules on fire.
- How long
- 45 minutes to 1.5 hours
- 01
Varmaala
वरमालाThe bride and groom exchange flower garlands to show they accept one another. It is often playful, with relatives lifting one of them out of reach. We film the crowd wide and the couple close.
- 02
Kanyadaan
कन्यादानThe bride's father joins her hand with the groom's, giving her into the marriage. It is among the most moving parts of the ceremony, and we keep three faces in view: father, bride and groom.
- 03
Vivaha Havan
The Pandit lights the sacred fire and begins the mantras, and the Agni becomes witness to all that comes after. We adjust for the flame's shifting color so it never pulls the grade off course.
- 04
Saptapadi
सप्तपदीThe binding momentThe couple takes seven steps around the fire with a vow for each one: nourishment, strength, prosperity, happiness, children and family, the changing seasons, and lifelong friendship. Walking together is what binds them. We keep the couple and the flame in one frame through every step.
- 05
Mangalsutra & Sindoor
The mangalsutra is tied around the bride's neck by the groom, who then places sindoor in the part of her hair to mark her as married. It is quiet, close and often tearful, and we film it without moving in on them.
- 06
Aashirwad
Elders and family shower the couple with rice and flower petals. After the formality of the rites the room relaxes, and the camera follows the celebration.
Before the ceremony
Most Hindu weddings in the US are a weekend, not an afternoon. We cover each event.
- the week of
Mehndi
The bride's hands and feet are covered in henna, with music and family around her. Joyful, and mostly led by the women.
- a day or two before
Haldi
Relatives apply turmeric paste to the bride and groom. Usually the most affectionate, and the messiest, morning of the weekend.
- the night before
Sangeet
Rehearsed performances, dancing and the biggest party before the wedding itself.
- wedding morning
Baraat
The groom arrives on a horse or in a car with dhol and dancing, often up a hotel driveway, before the welcome at the entrance.
- wedding evening
Reception
At many US weddings the ceremony leads into a cocktail hour and an evening reception with entrances, toasts and a first dance.

What we get right
Details a Hindu family will recognize from a crew that has stood beside a mandap before.
We expose for the flame
The Agni is a warm, moving light competing with spotlights and colored fabric. We set exposure and white balance with the fire in mind, so the entire ceremony grades to one consistent look.
We treat the Saptapadi as the marriage
The binding ritual is the walk, not a spoken vow. We frame couple and fire as one for all seven steps, so the moment that marries them is never lost in a wide crowd shot.
We confirm your rituals with your Pandit
Gujarati, Punjabi, Marathi, Telugu and other regional ceremonies follow different orders and use different names. We talk with your Pandit before the day about which rites you are including and when, so nothing important catches us unprepared.
We plan around venue fire rules
Many US hotels and banquet halls require advance approval for an open flame, and some ask for a smaller havan kund or a particular setup. We coordinate with your planner and venue coordinator so our camera positions fit whatever has been approved, and crew and equipment stay well clear of the fire.
Questions
Before you ask.
How do you handle the low, warm light of the fire?
Fast lenses, careful exposure and deliberate white balance on the day, then a considered grade afterward. The Agni and the mandap spotlights rarely match in color, and our job is to make the ceremony look like one continuous film.
Our venue has rules about open flames. Does that affect filming?
It can change where the havan sits and how large the fire is allowed to be, which changes the light and our positions. Many hotels require approvals for an indoor fire, so we ask your planner or venue coordinator what has been agreed and place our cameras around it.
Ours is a Gujarati or South Indian ceremony. Are you familiar with how it differs?
We are, and we still check the details with your Pandit instead of assuming. Regional ceremonies vary in sequence and vocabulary. A Tamil Thirumanam and a North Indian Vivaah, for example, run in different sequences, so we settle the order of rituals well before the date.
How much time should we allow for the ceremony?
Plan on roughly 45 to 90 minutes for the Vivaah. The full wedding day, with the Baraat, the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception, is far longer, and most families we film add the Mehndi, Haldi and Sangeet across the weekend.
Can you turn a multi-day wedding into one film?
Yes, that is the core of our work. We film each event and cut the weekend into one feature-length film under a single grade, so the Mehndi plays as an early chapter of the same story as the Vivaah.
